Using students as active participants in the learning process

  • Speed dating – students sit in a line, in a row of desks.  They each have a piece of information.  Other students then sit opposite them.  The first row of students then have to teach the student opposite them, the piece of information they have.  The second row of students then all move along one and receive new information.  At the end, they share all of their new knowledge.


  • Tag team questions.  Teacher has sets of envelopes with questions in them, written on strips of paper.  Teams of students are given one question that they have to take back to their team to answer.  Once they have answered it, they come back to the teacher to get it checked, before picking up another question strip.  The team that has collected the most question strips after a set period of time wins.


  • Following a test identify  the 7-8 topics that students struggled with the most (or get them to by self- assessing).  Split students up into 7-8 groups.  Each group is      allocated a topic to research and produce some summary notes on.  They then present what they have found out about the topic to the rest of the class.  The summary sheets can be collected, collated, photocopied and distributed to the class as a ‘Difficult bits      revision booklet’.


  • Ask teams of students to teach a part of the lesson.


  • Specification RAGing.  Get the exam board specification and get students to cut the statements up into strips.  They then stick the strips on red, amber or green paper, depending on how well they understand the topic.  They can then use this to prioritise    their revision.


  • Home/Expert groups.  Students put in ‘Home’ groups.  Each students in the home group is given a number  e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.  All the 1s then form a group, as do the 2s etc. to form ‘expert’ groups.  Each expert group now researches a particular topic.   They then all return to their home group and each expert then teaches the other members of the home group what they have learnt.
