Developing Independent Learners

A group of staff met this week to discuss key skills and attributes to develop our students as independent learners:

  • Use research skills to select appropriate information
  • Speaking, listening and presnting their ideas
  • Evaluate their learning
  • Revision and summarising skills
  • Group and peer learning
  • Literacy skills
  • Ask good questions
  • Be able to solve problems and work through open ended tasks
  • Discussion and debate

As well as:

  • Making sure they are equipped for learning
  • Homework is used to develop organisation and self-management skills
  • Dependence on the teacher is reduced by using the 5Bs when students get stuck – Brain, Book, Board, Buddy Boss
  • being self-aware in terms of their learning – do they know their expected grade, what that means in terms of their learning, where they are currently and what they need to do to improve?
